20th Anniversary Kendo Tournament

UMKC 20th Anniversary Taikai

63 Competitors entered the UMKC 20th Anniversary Taikai held on May 23rd 2009 at the West Stadium in the University of Melbourne’s Sports Centre.  The competition was divided into four divisions by grade and this format allowed for the final two competitors in each division the go forward into the next division.

Shinpan

Thanks are due to the following kendoka who acted as shinpan on the day; without them the competition would not be possible:

All Competitors from the 3-4 Dan Division refereed in the 6-3 Kyu and the 2-1 Kyu Divisions: C Chan, R Hikima, K Sugimoto, K Sylvester, C Panagopoulos, H Hiwatari, D Morihashi, A Lam, M Henstock, C Goletsos, and C Kobayashi.

Non-Players B Gazzaniga, H Shinoda, S Polichroniadis, G Oliver, R Walker, R Ward, A Martin and K Chin refereed the 1-2 Dan and the 3-4 dan Divisions.

Y Macak, B Gazzaniga and H Shinoda  shared the shinpan-shunin roles; shinpan-cho was Mr Y Yano, Renshi, 7 Dan.  Mr S Fujiwara, 7 Dan, who will be in Melbourne for 12 months, observed and offered comments for the shinpan and the competitors at the end of the day, as did Mr Yano.

2-1 Kyu Division:

1-2 Dan Division:

• Equal 3rd Place: A Mier (UMKC), T Mendelovits (UMKC)
• Runner Up: A Corrigan (MBK)
• Winner: M Yano (Monash)

3-4 Dan Division:

• Equal 3rd Place: M Henstock (UNSW), K Sylvester (Fudoshin)
• Runner Up: R Hikima (MBK)
• Winner: H Hiwatari (UMKC)
